Home Fire Safety Tips

Few anticipate being the victim of a house fire. When a fire occurs in a home however, the results can be serious. Even a small fire inside the home can result in smoke and water damage, creating serious losses and perhaps even use of the home.

Keeping a home safe from fires can take some simple, yet diligent steps. Here are fire safety steps to take in your home.

Have a charged, home fire extinguisher available.

Home-style fire extinguishers are affordable and valuable. Select an A-B-C fire extinguisher that is versatile for use on wood and paper, liquids and electrical equipment. If you already have an extinguisher, check to make sure it is charged.

Only plug space heaters directly into a wall.

Never use household extension cords when plugging in an electric space heater. These heaters should only be plugged directly into a wall socket and must have a trip switch should it be inadvertently knocked over. Don’t place space heaters any closer than three feet from household items or furniture.

Keep candles away from curtains, kids and pets.

Many enjoy the smell of scented candles in the cooler temperatures. Make sure candle wicks are trimmed and flames stay below the rim of the jar. Keep lit candles away from curtains and other flammable materials and make sure they can not be reached by children or pets.

Install smoke alarms.

Smoke alarms are an inexpensive way to protect family members from a house fire. Install smoke alarms on every floor of your home.

Have an escape plan.

Discuss with your family what should happen in the event of a fire in your home and create an escape plan. A chain or rope style ladder should be made available for two story structures.

Check electrical cords.

Occasionally inspect electric and extension cords to make sure ends and cords are not worn or frayed. Cords should not be placed in traffic areas.
